East Grand Lake

East Grand Lake is located between the U.S. state of Maine and the Canadian province of New Brunswick. The boundary between the United States and Canada passes through the lake. In Maine it falls within two counties, Washington and Aroostook, and in New Brunswick it serves as the western boundary of York County. The lake is part of the Chiputneticook chain of lakes which also include Spednic, North, and Palfrey and form the headwaters of the St. Croix River.

Chiputneticook Lakes

The Chipnuneticook Lakes are a group of several lakes along the International Boundary between Maine and New Brunswick. They are East Grand Lake, North Lake, Mud Lake, Spednic Lake, and Palfrey Lake. This lake system forms the head waters of the St. Croix River which the International Boundary follows to Passamaquoddy Bay. Chipnuneticook is a word of unknown origin given to the lakes by the Maliseet Nation.

The community has the unusual distinction of sharing its name with the community of Forest City immediately across the Canada–United States border in the state of Maine. Forest City was once home to 1,000 residents, where its proximity to the waters of East Grand Lake and the softwood forests of the upper St. Croix River watershed provided a lucrative tanning industry that supported an active economy.
