The Mount (Lenox, Massachusetts)

The Mount (1902) is a country house in Lenox, Massachusetts, the home of noted American author Edith Wharton, who designed the house and its grounds and considered it her "first real home. " The estate, located in The Berkshires, is open to the public from May to October, when visitors are offered tours of the house and gardens. From November to May, the grounds remain open, though the buildings are closed unless there is a special event.

October Mountain State Forest

October Mountain State Forest is a state forest in Lee, Massachusetts, U.S.A. The 16,500-acre forest, the largest state forest in Massachusetts, is managed by the Department of Conservation and Recreation with scenic trails leading to Schermerhorn Gorge. Herman Melville is reputed as having anointed the area as "October Mountain". His home in Pittsfield overlooks some of the hills. The forest came to state ownership via the estate of William C.
