Keweenaw Peninsula

The Keweenaw Peninsula is the northernmost part of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. It projects into Lake Superior and was the site of the first copper boom in the United States. As of the 2000 census, its population was roughly 43,200. Its major industries are now logging and tourism, as well as jobs related to Michigan Technological University and Finlandia University.

Gay, Michigan

Gay is an unincorporated community in Keweenaw County in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is 12 miles from Lake Linden on Copper Island at the western end of the Upper Peninsula. Local government is provided by Sherman Township. As of 2000, its population is 60. The Mohawk Mining Company built a stamp mill in Gay in 1898. The residual stamp sand dumped into Lake Superior increased the town's area greatly. Today, only the large smokestack and the ruins from the stamp mill still remain.

Copper City is a village in Houghton County of the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 190 at the 2010 census. The village is within Calumet Township.

Gregoryville

Gregoryville was a small hamlet located on Torch Lake in Schoolcraft Township, near Lake Linden, in Houghton County, Michigan. The hamlet was more of a company town that arose out of the Joseph Gregoire lumber interests. Mr. Gregoire only hired French-Canadians to work for him, hence his title, "Father of the French Canadians. " There were a handful of families that made up the population along with the workers at the sawmill.
