Prairie Island Indian Community

Prairie Island Indian Community is a Mdewakanton Sioux Indian reservation in Goodhue County, Minnesota, along the Mississippi River, in and around the city of Red Wing. It was created in 1889, with boundaries modified after that time. Much of the reservation land was lost following construction of Lock and Dam No. 3 along the river by the United States Army Corps of Engineers to improve navigation. Later, the Prairie Island Nuclear Power Plant was built nearby.

Lock and Dam No. 3

Lock and Dam No. 3 is a lock and dam located near Red Wing, Minnesota on the Upper Mississippi River around river mile 796.9. It was constructed and placed in operation July 1938. The site underwent major rehabilitation from 1988 through 1991. The dam consists of concrete 365 feet long with 4 roller gates and more than 2,000 feet of earth embankment with a series of upstream spot dikes. The lock is 110 feet wide by 600 feet long.

Welch Village

Welch Village is an American ski area near Red Wing, Minnesota. Founded by Leigh Nelson, The ski area was built in 1965 and has increased in size since. It has a vertical elevation of approximately 360 feet . Its traditional opening time is on or around the third Saturday in November. Welch Village has a large chalet with two cafeteria-style restaurants. There is a bar near the triple lift. Welch Village offers ski instruction.
