Battle of Milliken's Bend

The Battle of Milliken's Bend, fought June 7, 1863, was part of the Vicksburg Campaign of the American Civil War. Confederate Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton and his army were besieged in Vicksburg, Mississippi, by Union commander Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant and the Army of the Tennessee. In an effort to cut Grant's supply line and relieve the city, the Confederates attacked the Union supply area at Milliken's Bend up the Mississippi.

Issaquena County, Mississippi

Issaquena County is a county located in the Mississippi Delta region of the U.S. state of Mississippi. As of 2010, the population was 1,406, making it the smallest county by population in Mississippi. Its county seat is Mayersville. Issaquena is a Native American word which means Deer River. The county is highly based on agriculture. Of Note: Just before the Civil War, 92.5% of Issaquena County's total population were slaves--the highest concentration of slaves in the United States.
