During wartime, the camp's mission is to serve as a major independent mobilization station of the United States Army Forces Command (FORSCOM).

Forrest County was carved out of the western portion of Perry County in 1908. It is named in honor of Nathan B. Forrest, a Confederate general in the American Civil War and the first Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan. Its county seat and largest city is Hattiesburg.

New Augusta is a town in Perry County, Mississippi. It is part of the Hattiesburg, Mississippi Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 715 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Perry County. New Augusta is located about two miles south of "Old" Augusta, which was the county seat until 1906.

Perry County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. It is part of the Hattiesburg, Mississippi Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of 2010, the population was 12,250. It was named after the War of 1812 naval hero, Oliver Hazard Perry. The county seat is New Augusta. Until 1906, the county seat was the old town of Augusta, near the center of the county on the east bank of the Leaf River. At Old Augusta, the outlaw, James Copeland, was executed by hanging on October 30, 1857.

It is the county seat of Lamar County. The Town of Purvis was incorporated on February 25, 1888 and was founded by and named after Thomas Melville Purves, originally of Marion County, Alabama. Purves, born March 8, 1820 was a second generation Scottish-American whose grandfather immigrated to Charleston, South Carolina in 1765.
