Forrest County, Mississippi

Forrest County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. It is part of the Hattiesburg, Mississippi Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of 2010, the population was 74,934. Forrest County was carved out of the western portion of Perry County in 1908. It is named in honor of Nathan B. Forrest, a Confederate general in the American Civil War and the first Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan. Its county seat and largest city is Hattiesburg.

Camp Shelby

Camp Shelby is a military post whose North Gate begins at the southern boundary of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, on United States Highway 49. It is the largest state-owned training site in the nation. During wartime, the camp's mission is to serve as a major independent mobilization station of the United States Army Forces Command (FORSCOM).

Purvis, Mississippi

Purvis is a city in Lamar County, Mississippi. It is part of the Hattiesburg, Mississippi Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 2,164 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Lamar County. The Town of Purvis was incorporated on February 25, 1888 and was founded by and named after Thomas Melville Purves, originally of Marion County, Alabama. Purves, born March 8, 1820 was a second generation Scottish-American whose grandfather immigrated to Charleston, South Carolina in 1765.

Hattiesburg, Mississippi

Hattiesburg is a city in Mississippi, bisected by the county line between Forrest County and Lamar County. The population was 45,989 in the 2010 census. It is the principal city of the Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Metropolitan Statistical Area which encompasses Forrest, Lamar and Perry counties. Founded in 1882 by pioneer lumberman and civil engineer William H. Hardy, Hattiesburg was named in honor of Hardy's wife Hattie. The town was incorporated two years later with a population of 400.
