Ripley, Mississippi

Ripley is a city in Tippah County, Mississippi. The population was 5,478 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Tippah County. Colonel William Clark Falkner, great-grandfather of authors William Faulkner and John Faulkner, was a prominent resident of Ripley in the mid to late-19th century. W.C. Falkner's exploits in and around Ripley served as the model for Faulkner's character of Colonel John Sartoris.

Ashland, Mississippi

Ashland is a town in Benton County, Mississippi. The population was 577 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Benton County. Ashland was incorporated on March 8, 1871 and has a Mayor-Alderman form of government. Mitch Carroll is the 28th Mayor of the Town of Ashland, and Sandra Gresham, Bobby Huddleston, Brian Jeanes, Billy Taylor and Shannon Wilburn make up the present Board of Aldermen.

Benton County, Mississippi

Benton County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. In 2010, the population was 8,729. Its county seat is Ashland. Local lore has it that residents convinced the reconstruction government that Benton County was to be named for U.S. Senator Thomas Hart Benton, but the name was actually chosen to honor Confederate General Samuel Benton from nearby Holly Springs.

Tippah County, Mississippi

Tippah County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. In 2010, the population was 22,232. Its county seat is Ripley. The name "Tippah" is a Chickasaw word meaning "cut off", and is taken from the creek of the same name that flows across much of the original county from northeast to southwest before emptying into the Tallahatchie River. The creek probably was so named because it, and the ridges on either side, "cut off" the western part of the region from the eastern portion.
