Stark City, Missouri

Stark City is a village in Newton County, Missouri, United States. The population was 139 at the 2010 census, at which time it was a town. It is part of the Joplin, Missouri Metropolitan Statistical Area. It was formerly called Chester, but was renamed in the 1930s for the Stark Brother's Nursery, which was a previous prevalent industry to the village and its close neighbor, Newtonia. It is adjacent to the battlefield of the Second Battle of Newtonia.

Second Battle of Newtonia

The Second Battle of Newtonia was fought on October 28, 1864, in Newton County, Missouri, as part of Major General Sterling Price's Missouri Expedition of the American Civil War. Price's Confederate cavalry force was in full retreat following its expedition into Missouri. On October 28, 1864, it stopped to rest about two miles (3 km) south of Newtonia, Missouri.
