The population was 216 at the 2010 census. Garland is the current residence of Poet Laureate Ted Kooser, and the subject (among other aspects of rural life) of Kooser's book Local Wonders: Seasons in the Bohemian Alps.

Branched Oak State Recreation Area

Branched Oak State Recreation Area (Branched Oak Lake) is a Nebraska state recreation area located two and a half miles north of Malcolm, Nebraska in Lancaster County. The lake is the largest of the Salt Valley Lakes with 1,800 acres of water in a 5,595-acre park. The area has several camping facilities, ranging from modern to primitive. There is a shop inside the park area where visitors can buy firewood/bait and also purchase boat rentals.
