Sacramento National Forest

Sacramento National Forest was established by the U.S. Forest Service in New Mexico on April 24, 1907 with 881,841 acres . On July 1, 1908 the entire forest was combined with Guadalupe National Forest to create Alamo National Forest. The lands are presently part of the Sacramento District of Lincoln National Forest. The district comprises the southern Sacramento Mountains to the east of Alamogordo.

Timberon, New Mexico

Timberon is a census-designated place (CDP) in Otero County, New Mexico and is within the Sacramento Mountains at the southern edge of the Lincoln National Forest, directly north of the Fort Bliss Military Reservation. The population was 309 at the 2000 census. Timberon has a 9-hole golf course, as well as a lodge, a pool, a church, an airstrip and a volunteer fire department. The residents consider it a retirement and resort community.

Cathey Peak

Cathey Peak is a peak in the Sacramento Mountains, in the south-central part of the US State of New Mexico. It lies in Otero County, 10 miles southeast of the community of Alamogordo. Sacramento Peak, at 9,262 feet, is a nearby subpeak of Cathey Peak, and is more widely known due to the presence of several observatories on or near its summit.
