Fort Wingate

Fort Wingate is near Gallup, New Mexico. There were two locations in New Mexico that had this name. The first one was located near San Rafael. The current fort was established on the southern edge of the Navajo territory in 1862. The initial purpose of the fort was to control the large Navajo tribe to its north. It was involved with the Navajo's Long Walk. From 1870 onward the garrison was concerned with Apaches to the south and hundreds of Navajo Scouts were enlisted at the fort through 1890.

Church Rock is a census-designated place (CDP) in McKinley County, New Mexico, United States. It is within the Navajo Nation. The population was 1,077 at the 2000 census. Church Rock is named for a prominent natural landmark with the same name.

Miyamura High School

Miyamura High School is a high school in Gallup, New Mexico, United States. Formerly known as Gallup Junior High School serving 8th and 9th grade students, it was renamed Miyamura High School in 2007. The campus will undergo a massive renovation from 2008 to 2010 as part of the Gallup-McKinley County Schools district's plan to create a second high school for Gallup. The school's location was also the old Gallup High School campus from 1962 to 1998 before moving to Gallup's west side.

Church Rock uranium mill spill

The Church Rock uranium mill spill occurred in New Mexico on July 16, 1979 when United Nuclear Corporation's Church Rock uranium mill tailings disposal pond breached its dam. Over 1,000 tons of solid radioactive mill waste and 93 millions of gallons of acidic, radioactive tailings solution flowed into the Puerco River, and contaminants traveled 80 miles downstream to Navajo County, Arizona and onto the Navajo Nation.
