Dharma Drum Retreat Center

Dharma Drum Retreat Center (DDRC) was founded by renowned Chinese Ch'an (Zen) Master, Master Sheng-yen. Its location is at the rural area of Pine Bush, New York, just about two hours drive or 90 miles northwest of New York City. The center's properties stand on 125 acres of land dominated by meadowland and woods of maple, oak, and beech populated by wild animals like birds, woodchucks, deer, and black bear. Beyond the center to the north is the ecologically-protected Shawangunk Ridge.

Delaware and Hudson Canal

The Delaware and Hudson Canal was the first development venture of the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company, which would later develop the Delaware and Hudson Railway. Between 1828 and 1899, the canal's barges carried anthracite coal from the mines of Northeastern Pennsylvania to the Hudson River and then to its market in New York City. These developments affected both the city and the region, stimulating the former's growth and encouraging settlement in the latter, then sparsely populated.
