Blue Ridge Parkway tunnels
Blue Ridge Parkway tunnels consist of a total of 26 vehicle tunnels constructed along the 469 miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway. One, the Bluff Mountain Tunnel, is in Virginia and twenty-five are in North Carolina. The design standards specified a minimum impact on the land. The vehicle tunnels were often constructed to reduce excessive landscape scarring that open cuts would have produced. They are used in areas of steep terrain where ridges run perpendicular to the roadway alignment.

Little Switzerland is an unincorporated community in McDowell and Mitchell counties of North Carolina, United States. It is located along NC 226A off the Blue Ridge Parkway, directly north of Marion, North Carolina and south of Spruce Pine. At this location, in 1909, on eleven hundred acres surveyed from the top of Grassy Mountain, the "Switzerland Company" was founded by North Carolina State Supreme Court Justice Heriot Clarkson.

Arthur Morgan School
Arthur Morgan School (AMS) is a small, coed boarding and day school for 27 students in grades 7, 8 and 9 . AMS is located on 100 acres of farm and wilderness in the Celo Community, about an hour north of Asheville, North Carolina. The AMS program focuses on the holistic education of adolescents. In addition to the academic program, the school has an outdoor program including 3-, 6- and 8-day hikes.

Murphy Branch
The historically important Murphy Branch is the western most part of what was the Western North Carolina Railroad, later the Richmond and Danville, Southern Railway and today the Norfolk Southern Railway. The branch runs between Asheville, North Carolina in the east and Andrews in the west. It roughly follows Interstate 40 and the Great Smoky Mountains Expressway. The railroad branch was constructed with convict labor between 1881 and 1894.
