Hiddenite, North Carolina
Hiddenite is an unincorporated community in east-central Alexander County, North Carolina. It is part of the Hickory–Lenoir–Morganton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town of Hiddenite was incorporated in 1913, but its charter was repealed in 1919. Hiddenite was named for William Earl Hidden (1853–1918), a mineralogist sent to North Carolina by Thomas Edison to look for platinum. Hidden discovered the gem that came to be known as "hiddenite" in 1879 in mines nearby.

Hiddenite Gem Mines
Currently in North Carolina there are only a few major mines that produce significant amounts of emerald stones. Three of the larger mines in Hiddenite, NC, include Adams Mine, NAEM, and the Emerald Hollow Mine. They are all collectively known as the Hiddenite Gem Mines. The first discovery of the hiddenite stone was made in 1879. The stone was revealed to Mr. W. E. Hidden. The samples were sent to Dr. J. Lawrence Smith in Louisville, Kentucky, who determined that the stone Mr.
