Joara

Joara was a large Native American settlement, a regional chiefdom of the Mississippian culture, located in what is now Burke County, North Carolina. Joara is notable as a significant archaeological and historic site. It was a place of encounter in 1540 between the Mississippian people and the party of Spanish conquistador Hernando De Soto. A later expedition under Juan Pardo in 1567 created the first brief European settlement in the interior of the continent.

Brown Mountain (North Carolina)

Brown Mountain is a low-lying ridge, approximately 1.5 miles long, in the Pisgah National Forest near Morganton, North Carolina, on the border of Burke and Caldwell Counties. For perhaps hundreds of years, and since at least the early 1900s, mysterious illuminations known as the Brown Mountain Lights have been seen there. The lights are small balls that appear irregularly over Brown Mountain.

Lake James

Lake James is a large reservoir in the mountains of Western North Carolina which straddles the border between Burke and McDowell Counties. It is named for tobacco tycoon and benefactor of Duke University, James Buchanan Duke. The lake lies behind a series of 4 earthen dams, and was created by Duke Power between 1916-1923 as a hydro-electric project. It still generates power today, and is the uppermost lake on the Catawba River system.

WMNC-FM is a radio station broadcasting a New Country format. Licensed to Morganton, North Carolina, USA, the station is currently owned by Cooper Broadcasting Company and has been in the family since its sister station WMNC-AM went on the air in 1947. In 2009, the station obtained a construction permit from the FCC for a power increase from 6,000 watts to 25,000 watts.
