Powhatan Point, Ohio

Powhatan Point is one of several small villages in Belmont County, Ohio, United States, along the Ohio River. The population was 1,592 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wheeling, West Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area. While "Powhatan" likely memorializes the Native-American tribe of the same name, the "Point" in the town's name refers to the confluence between the Captina Creek and the Ohio River. Powhatan Point is the closest town on the Ohio side of Captina Island in the Ohio River.

Captina Island

Captina Island is an island on the Ohio River in Marshall County, West Virginia in the United States. Powhatan Point, Ohio is located on the opposite shore from Captina Island. It lies at the southern end of Round Bottom with a stream-like channel separating the island from the West Virginia shore. Captina Island was once the place where watermelons were grown for the Marshall County Fair. It is part of the Ohio River Islands National Wildlife Refuge.

Mitchell Power Plant

Mitchell Power Plant is a large coal fired power station at Moundsville, West Virginia, USA. It has a 1,206 foot tall chimney, which was built in 1971. This smokestack was once the tallest in the world for a short period of time. It is currently the fifth tallest.

Lord Dunmore's War

Lord Dunmore's War — or Dunmore's War — was a 1774 conflict between the Colony of Virginia and the Shawnee and Mingo American Indian nations. The Governor of Virginia was John Murray, 4th Earl of Dunmore — Lord Dunmore. He asked the Virginia House of Burgesses to declare a state of war with the hostile Indian nations and order up an elite volunteer militia force for the campaign.
