Battle of the Combahee River

The Battle of the Combahee River was a skirmish of the American Revolutionary War fought on August 26, 1782, near Beaufort, South Carolina, one of many such unimportant confrontations to occur before the British evacuated Charleston in December 1782. Of note is the death of 27-year-old Colonel John Laurens, "one of the bravest and most gallant of the American officers."

Combahee River

The Combahee River is a short blackwater river in the southern Lowcountry region of South Carolina formed at the confluence of the Salkehatchie and Little Salkehatchie rivers near the Islandton community of Colleton County, South Carolina. Part of its lower drainage basin combines with the Ashepoo River and the Edisto River to form the ACE Basin The Combahee empties into Saint Helena Sound near Beaufort, which in turn empties into the Atlantic Ocean.

Lady's Island (South Carolina)

Lady's Island is a predominantly residential Sea Island located in Beaufort County, South Carolina. Small portions of the island are within the City of Beaufort, while the majority of the island remains unincorporated. The island was predominantly rural and agricultural in character for much of its human history. In the 1920s the first bridge connected downtown Beaufort with Lady's Island.

University of South Carolina Beaufort

The University of South Carolina Beaufort (often abbreviated to USCB or USC-Beaufort) is a public university serving nearly 2,000 students with two campuses located in the Lowcountry region of South Carolina. The larger "Hilton Head Gateway" campus is located between Bluffton and Hardeeville near Hilton Head Island. The original Historic Beaufort campus is located in downtown Beaufort.
