Largely because of annexation of surrounding areas, the population of Port Royal rose from 3,950 in 2000 to 10,678 in 2010, a 170% increase. United States Naval Hospital Beaufort

United States Naval Hospital Beaufort is a United States Navy hospital located in Port Royal, South Carolina. Commissioned on 29 April 1949, the hospital is one of only a handful of its kind that sits within its own complex rather than within a larger base. It takes its name from Beaufort, the larger community north of Port Royal that is commonly associated with military installations in the Lowcountry region.

Fort Frederick Heritage Preserve

Fort Frederick Heritage Preserve is a 3-acre property located in Port Royal, South Carolina. Situated along the Beaufort River, the preserve contains the remains of Fort Frederick. Also known as "Fort Prince Frederick", the tabby fort was built by the British between 1730 and 1734 to defend against a possible attack from the Spanish at St. Augustine, Florida. It was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
