Built to contain no more than about 1,600 students, it has been expanded to accommodate a little over 1,900, and has faced severe overcrowding. Portable classrooms have been installed for the 2005-2006 school year. During the 12-13 school year, the population has expanded to over 2,000 students.

Dutch Fork
The Dutch Fork is a region of South Carolina located in Lexington, Newberry, and Richland Counties between the Saluda River and the Broad River where they fork together, forming the Congaree River. The area is named after the original German settlers of the area, and like the Pennsylvania Dutch, Dutch here is a corruption of the term deutsch (which means German in the German language).

Irmo Middle School
Irmo Middle School is located at 6051 Wescott Road, Irmo, South Carolina. It is part of School District 5 of Lexington and Richland Counties. The school enrolls rising seventh and eighth graders, and after passing the eighth grade, students continue to Irmo High School. The principal is Mrs. Marie Waldrop. Both Irmo High School's and Irmo Middle School's mascot is a yellow jacket. As of the 2006-2007 school year the school had 1143 students enrolled.
