The city is home to Texas A&M University–Commerce, and is situated approximately 60 miles northeast of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, and 45 miles south of the Texas/Oklahoma border.

It is the home of the Texas A&M University–Commerce Lions Men's and Women's basketball teams, as well as home to Lady Lion Volleyball.
