Clarendon, Texas

Clarendon is a city in Donley County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,974 at the 2000 census. The county seat of Donley County, Clarendon is located on United States Highway 287 in the Texas Panhandle some sixty miles east of Amarillo. It was established in 1878 by Methodist clergyman L.H. Carhart as a "sobriety settlement" in contrast to typical boom towns of that era.

Donley County, Texas

Donley County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2010 census, its population was 3,677. It is named for Stockton P. Donley, a frontier lawyer. Its county seat is Clarendon. The legendary cattle baron Charles Goodnight spent his later years in Donley County. It was also the home of historian Harley True Burton, author of A History of the JA Ranch, which Goodnight formerly co-owned. Burton was president of Clarendon College and the mayor of Clarendon from 1955-1963.

Alanreed, Texas

Alanreed is an unincorporated community in Gray County, Texas, United States. It is part of the Pampa, Texas Micropolitan Statistical Area. The community was named for Messrs. Alan and Reed, partners in the contracting firm that laid out the present townsite for the Choctaw, Oklahoma and Texas Railroad in 1900. An earlier name for the place was Gouge Eye, in honor of a memorable saloon brawl. Alanreed is accessible via Interstate 40 and FM 291.
