Independence, Texas

Independence is an unincorporated community in Washington County, Texas, United States. Located twelve miles northeast of Brenham, it was founded in 1835 in Austin's colony of Anglo Americans. It became a Baptist religious and educational center of the Republic of Texas. In 1846 it became the first site of Baylor University and the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.

Old Independence Cemetery

Old Independence Cemetery was founded in 1823. It is located in Independence, Texas on land donated by Madora Cole McCrocklin, a daughter of Judge J. P. Cole, one of the Old Three Hundred from the Austin Colony. The cemetery was an early community graveyard used by Anglo-American pioneers of Texas. It is commemorated by a state historical marker.

Washington County is a county in the U.S. state of Texas, known for the Convention of 1836 where the Texas Declaration of Independence was signed. As of the 2010 census, the population was 33,718. Its county seat is Brenham. The county is named for George Washington, the first president of the United States. The Brenham Micropolitan Statistical Area includes all of Washington County.

Quarry is an unincorporated community in northern Washington County, Texas, United States. It lies along State Highway 36 northwest of the city of Brenham, the county seat of Washington County. Named for local quarries, the community was built along the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway.
