Gray County, Texas

Gray County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2010 census, its population was 22,535. Gray County is named for Peter W. Gray, a Confederate lawyer and soldier in the American Civil War. The seat of the county is Pampa. Gray County is part of the Pampa Micropolitan Statistical Area. Gray County was the center of the White Deer Lands Management Company, which ceased operations in 1957.

Pampa Army Air Field

Pampa Army Airfield is an abandoned airfield located about 11 miles east of Pampa in Gray County, Texas. During World War II, the United States Army Air Forces used Pampa Airfield as a training airfield by the Army Air Forces Flying Training Command, Gulf Coast Training Center.

Battle of the North Fork of the Red River

The Battle of North Fork or the Battle of the North Fork of the Red River occurred on September 28, 1872, near McClellan Creek in Gray County, Texas, United States. A monument on that spot marks the site of the battle between the Comanche Indians under Kai-Wotche and Mow-way and a detachment of cavalry and scouts under U.S. Army Colonel Ranald S. Mackenzie.

Pampa is the county seat of Gray County and is the principal city of the Pampa Micropolitan Statistical Area which includes both Gray and Roberts counties. Pampa hosts the Top 'O Texas Rodeo each year in July which brings competitors from Texas and the surrounding states to Gray County.
