One of the 23 schools in the Virginia Community College System, the college opened in 1963 as a two-year branch of Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University. The population as of the 2010 Census was 551. New River Trail State Park passes through Ivanhoe. It was the birthplace of Robert Sayers Sheffey, eccentric Methodist circuit rider and evangelist. Ivanhoe is situated in the Appalachian Mountains along New River.
