Trimble Knob
Trimble Knob, located southwest of Monterey, VA, in Highland County, is a conical hill composed of basalt, a volcanic rock, of Eocene age. It is the eroded remnant of what was an active volcano or diatreme approximately 35 million years ago, making it one of the youngest volcanos on the east coast of North America.

Elleber Ridge
Elleber Ridge is the name of a ridge in the Allegheny Mountains of West Virginia and it is also the name of the mountain's summit, Elleber Knob (4,595 ft). It is located in the eastern portion of Pocahontas County near the Virginia state line. The ridge and summit are located entirely in the Monongahela National Forest. Rattlesnake Trail runs from the base of the mountain to Elleber Knob. The summit is also accessible via Elleber Sods Road, which is maintained by the National Forest.

Battle of Camp Allegheny
The Battle of Camp Allegheny, also known as the Battle of Allegheny Mountain, took place on December 13, 1861, in Pocahontas County, Virginia as part of the Operations in Western Virginia Campaign during the American Civil War. In December, Confederate forces under Col. Edward Johnson occupied the summit of Allegheny Mountain to defend the Staunton-Parkersburg Pike. A Union force under Brig. Gen. Robert H. Milroy attacked Johnson at sunrise on December 13.

Known as "Virginia's Little Switzerland", Highland County is the least populous county in Virginia. Highland lays claim to being one of the least populous counties and one of the highest average elevations east of the Mississippi River.
