Cascade Tunnel

The Cascade Tunnel refers to two tunnels at Stevens Pass through the Cascade Mountains, approximately 65 miles to the east of Everett, Washington. The first Cascade Tunnel was a 2.63-mile (4.2 km) long single track railroad, built by the Great Northern Railway in 1900 to avoid problems caused by heavy winter snowfalls on the original line that had eight Zig Zags.

Stevens Pass Ski Area

The Stevens Pass Ski Area is a ski area located at the crest of Stevens Pass in the Cascade Range of Washington, United States. The base elevation is at 4,061 feet with the peak at 5,845 feet . The Mill Valley "backside" of the resort drops to a minimum elevation of 3,821 feet . Total skiable terrain includes 37 major runs covering 1,125 acres .

Stevens Pass

Stevens Pass (elevation 4,056 ft) is a mountain pass through the Cascade Mountains located at the border of King County and Chelan County in Washington, United States. U.S. Highway 2 travels over the pass, reaching a maximum elevation of 4,061 feet . The Pacific Crest Trail crosses the highway at Stevens Pass. The BNSF Railway's Cascade Tunnel lies 1,180 feet below the pass summit. The pass is near Stevens Pass Ski Area, which is on Cowboy Mountain and Big Chief Mountain.

Chiwaukum Mountains

The Chiwaukum Mountains are a north-south mountain range in central Washington, USA. They stretch from Snowgrass Mountain at {{#invoke:Coordinates|coord}}{{#coordinates:47|41|N|120|56|W||| | |name= }}, to {{#invoke:Coordinates|coord}}{{#coordinates:47|45|N|120|54|W||| | |name= }}. The mountains are made of schist, part of the Nason terrane. The original rock in the Nason terrane was laid down 210 Myr ago.

Wellington, Washington avalanche

The Wellington avalanche was the worst avalanche, measured in terms of lives lost, in the history of the United States. For nine days at the end of February 1910, the little town of Wellington, Washington was assailed by a terrible blizzard. Wellington was a Great Northern Railway stop high in the Cascades, on the west side of the old Cascade Tunnel, under Stevens Pass. As much as a foot of snow fell every hour, and, on the worst day, 11 feet of snow fell.
