It is part of the 'Wenatchee–East Wenatchee, Washington Metropolitan Statistical Area'. The county seat is at Wenatchee, which is also the county's largest city. "Chelan" derives from a Chelan Indian word meaning "deep water," likely a reference to 55-mile -long Lake Chelan, which reaches a maximum depth of 1,486 feet (453 m).

Leavenworth "Icicle" Station (LWA) is a station stop for Amtrak's Empire Builder in Leavenworth, Washington. The station started service on September 25, 2009. The station and parking are owned by the City of Leavenworth, Washington. The track and platforms are owned by BNSF Railway. There is no Amtrak Thruway Motorcoach connection at this station, but there is a stop at SR 2 and Icicle road.
