Marshall County is a county located in the U.S. state of West Virginia. It is part of the Wheeling, West Virginia, Metropolitan Statistical Area. West Virginia State Penitentiary

The West Virginia State Penitentiary is a retired, gothic style prison located in Moundsville, West Virginia. It operated from 1876 to 1995. Currently, the site is maintained as a tourist attraction and training facility.

Grave Creek Mound

At 62 feet high and 240 feet in diameter, the Grave Creek Mound is one of the largest conical type burial mounds in the United States. The builders of the site, members of the Adena culture, moved more than 60,000 tons of dirt to create it about 250-150 BC. It is located in present-day Moundsville, West Virginia, near the banks of the Ohio River. The first recorded excavation of the 2,000-year-old mound took place in 1838, and was conducted by local amateurs.
