Marshall County, West Virginia

Marshall County is a county located in the U.S. state of West Virginia. It is part of the Wheeling, West Virginia, Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of 2010, the population was 33,107. http://quickfacts. census. gov/qfd/states/54/54051. html Its county seat is Moundsville. Its southern border is the Mason-Dixon line. Marshall County is home to the largest conical burial mound in North America, at Moundsville. Marshall County was formed in 1835 from Ohio County by act of the Virginia Assembly.

Marshall County Airport is a public airport located three miles (5 km) south of the central business district of Moundsville, a city in Marshall County, West Virginia, United States. The airport is owned by the Marshall County Commission. Although most U.S. airports use the same three-letter location identifier for the FAA and IATA, Marshall County Airport is assigned MPG by the FAA but has no designation from the IATA.

Captina Island

Captina Island is an island on the Ohio River in Marshall County, West Virginia in the United States. Powhatan Point, Ohio is located on the opposite shore from Captina Island. It lies at the southern end of Round Bottom with a stream-like channel separating the island from the West Virginia shore. Captina Island was once the place where watermelons were grown for the Marshall County Fair. It is part of the Ohio River Islands National Wildlife Refuge.

West Virginia State Penitentiary

The West Virginia State Penitentiary is a retired, gothic style prison located in Moundsville, West Virginia. It operated from 1876 to 1995. Currently, the site is maintained as a tourist attraction and training facility.
