Anawalt, West Virginia

Anawalt is a town in McDowell County, West Virginia, United States. At one time it was known as Jeanette. The population was 226 at the 2010 census. Anawalt was incorporated in 1949. It is named in honor of Colonel Anawalt, who was then manager of Union Supply Company, a subsidiary of the United States Steel Company. Coal mining remains the town's chief industry.

Gary, West Virginia

Gary is a city in McDowell County, West Virginia, United States, along the Tug Fork River. The population was 968 at the 2010 census, making it the second largest city in McDowell County. Gary was a coal town run by the United States Steel Corporation. Gary was incorporated on July 1, 1971, by popular vote of residents in an election held on March 16, 1970. Incorporation includes five communities: Elbert, Filbert, Gary, Thorpe, and Wilcoe.

Keystone, West Virginia

Keystone is a town in McDowell County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 282 at the 2010 census. Keystone is one of several incorporated towns in West Virginia with an African-American majority, with 72 percent of the residents being black. Larry Scott Deaner wrote about the historical geography of the African-American population of Keystone in his 2004 Master's thesis.

Mount View High School (West Virginia)

Mount View High School (MVHS) is a public high school in Welch, West Virginia. Located on the grounds of an old strip mine in the mountains of McDowell County, West Virginia. Mount View High School is one of two schools in the Welch area, which includes Welch Elementary School. As of 2010, the school teaches forty-seven courses for its students, and serves grades 6–12. Mount View High School colors are gold and brown, which are also the colors of the school's mascot the Golden Knight.

Kimball, West Virginia

Kimball is a town in McDowell County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 194 at the 2010 census. Kimball was incorporated in 1911 and named for Frederick J. Kimball, who was a president of the Norfolk and Western Railway. Kimball was the site of the first war memorial building erected in memory of the African-American veterans of World War I.
