War, West Virginia

War is a city in McDowell County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 862 at the 2010 census. War was incorporated in 1920 by the Circuit Court of McDowell County. Its name is derived from War Creek, whose confluence with Dry Fork is located within the city. Legend has it that War Creek was in turn named by the local Native Americans about 1788 because of a battle which occurred near the source of the creek. War is the only place in the United States with this name.

McDowell County, West Virginia

McDowell County is a county in the U.S. state of West Virginia. The land that became McDowell was originally part of Tazewell County, Virginia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 22,113. Its county seat is Welch. McDowell county is the southernmost county in the state, geographically. It was created in 1858 by the Virginia General Assembly and named for Virginia Governor James McDowell.

Coalwood, West Virginia

Coalwood is an unincorporated coal mining town in McDowell County, West Virginia, USA. As of the 1990 Census, the population was 900. The coal mine in Coalwood reached its peak in the 1960s and finally shut down production on October 1, 1982. The town is the setting of the best-selling memoir Rocket Boys by Homer Hickam and the movie October Sky based on the book.

Bradshaw, McDowell County, West Virginia

Bradshaw is a town in McDowell County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 337 at the 2010 census. Bradshaw was incorporated in December 1979 and is named for a man who settled at the mouth of Bradshaw Creek in about 1840.
