Leatherbark Run

Leatherbark Run is the name of a stream in Pocahontas County, West Virginia, as well as the name of the gap in the Allegheny Mountains carved by the stream as it flows southeastward toward the Greenbrier River. The Leatherbark has the distinction of being West Virginia's highest stream. It begins at a natural spring on the south face of Bald Knob on Back Allegheny Mountain in the western half of the county. The elevation of its headwaters is over 4,680 feet above sea level.

Pocahontas County, West Virginia

Pocahontas County is a county located in the U.S. state of West Virginia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 8,719. http://quickfacts. census. gov/qfd/states/54/54075. html It was established in 1821 and is named after the Native American chief's daughter from Jamestown, Virginia. Its county seat is Marlinton. Pocahontas County is the home to the National Radio Astronomy Observatory Green Bank Telescope and is part of the National Radio Quiet Zone.

TWA Flight 1

Transcontinental and Western Airways Flight 1 (TWA 1), a Douglas DC-2, crashed into Cheat Mountain, near Uniontown, Pennsylvania, approximately 10:20 a.m. Eastern Standard Time on April 7, 1936, killing 12 of the 14 passengers and crew aboard. Flight 1 was a regularly scheduled TWA Sun Racer flight from Newark, New Jersey to Los Angeles, California with almost a dozen intermediate stops between.

Battle of Cheat Mountain

The Battle of Cheat Mountain, also known as the Battle of Cheat Summit Fort, took place from September 12 to 15, 1861, in Pocahontas County and Randolph County, Virginia as part of the Western Virginia Campaign during the American Civil War. It was the first battle of the Civil War in which Robert E. Lee led troops into combat.

Huttonsville Correctional Center

Huttonsville Correctional Center is the male maximum security prison for the state of West Virginia, USA. It is located near Huttonsville in a rural area of Randolph County, West Virginia. The prison was established as the Farm Branch of the West Virginia Penitentiary in 1937 in response to overcrowding at the West Virginia Penitentiary in Moundsville, West Virginia. It was renamed as the West Virginia Medium Security Prison in 1947 and to its current name in 1970.
