The district was split in 2004 to form a new district of Ca Mau Province. It previously covered an area of 670 km² but today covers 395.14 km².

The district capital lies at Cai Doi Vam. Phu Tan was created the government decree No 138/2003/NĐ-CP on November 17, 2003, after being split off from Cái Nước District. Phu Tan borders Cái Nước District to the east; ocean to the west, Năm Căn District to the south and Trần Văn Thời District to the north.

Tran Van Thoi District

Trần Văn Thời is a rural district (huyện) of Ca Mau Province in the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam. As of 2003 the district had a population of 191,718. The district covers an area of 700 km². The district capital lies at Tran Van Thoi. Tran Van Thoi is located in the western coast of the province and borders the Gulf of Thailand. It borders the districts of U Minh to the north and Ca Mau City to the east, and Phu Tan to the south. The Ông Đốc river flows through the district into the see.

Cà Mau Peninsula

Peninsula (Vietnamese: Bán Đảo Cà Mau) makes up the southern tip of Vietnam. It is in Ca Mau Province, and lies between the Gulf of Thailand to the west and the South China Sea to the east. Ca Mau is a triangular stretch of land, with a maximum length of 130 miles and average height of seven feet above the sea level. Its formation is almost totally the result of the deposits of the Mekong River, which is also behind the Cape Bai formation at the tail end of the peninsula.
