Big Ben Aden

Big Ben Aden is a clock tower built by British engineers, along with locals, beside Aden Harbour during the period that Aden Province was a territory within the British Empire. It is superficially similar to the Elizabeth Tower (popularly known as Big Ben), the famous clock tower attached to the Palace of Westminster in London. The clock was shut down for renovation about a quarter of a century ago, and returned to service in February 2012.

EgyptAir Flight 763

EgyptAir Flight 763 was an international non-scheduled passenger flight from Cairo, Egypt to Aden, South Yemen. On 19 March 1972, the flight was a McDonnell Douglas DC9-32 registered in Yugoslavia as YU-AHR and operated by the newly renamed EgyptAir. It crashed into the Shamsan Mountains on approach to Aden, killing all 30 people on board.

'Adan Governorate

'Adan is a governorate of Yemen, including the city of Aden. At the 2004 census it had a population of 589,419. The ancient capital, the port city of Crater, was located here. 'Adan was under British rule in the period from 1839 to 1967. In 1967, after years of struggle, 'Adan and other southern governorates gained their independence. The city of Aden subsequently became the capital of South Yemen between 1967 and 1990).

Crater, Yemen

Crater, also Kraytar, is one of the unofficial names of the oldest districts of the port city of Aden. Its official name is Seera . It is situated in a crater of an ancient volcano which forms the Shamsan Mountains. In 1991, the population was 70,319. In the closing days of British rule in 1967, Crater District became the focus of the Aden Emergency, sometimes called the last imperial war.
