Cheikh Saïd

Cheikh Saïd is a rocky peninsula in Yemen, near the island of Perim on the Bab-el-Mandeb at the entrance to the Red Sea. In 1868 it was purchased from the local ruler, Sheikh Ali Tabet Ahmed, by Bazin et Rabaud, a private company based in Marseilles in France, which wanted to use it as a base for exporting coffee. The purchase price was 80,000 thalers. In 1869, the sheikh annulled the agreement as he had received only 18,000 thalers.

Bab Iskender

The Bab Iskender is the eastern section 2 miles wide and 16 fathoms of the Bab-el-Mandeb straits, which separates Ras Menheli, Yemen, on the Arabian Peninsula and Ras Siyyan, Djibouti, on the Horn of Africa. The Yemeni island of Perim divides the strait into two channels, Bab Iskender and Dact-el-Mayun respectively. The western section of the straits, Dact-el-Mayun, has a width of about 16 miles and a depth of 170 fathoms . The straits are about 20 miles wide in total.

Perim

Perim, also called Mayyun in Arabic, is a volcanic island located in the Strait of Mandeb at the southern entrance into the Red Sea, off the southwestern coast of Yemen. The island measures 5.63 kilometres long and 2.85 kilometres wide; it has a surface area of 13 square kilometers and rises to an altitude of 65 meters. The distance from the Perim Island to Africa (Djibouti) is 20.3 kilometers. There is a natural harbour on the southwestern coast.
