Alexandria Ariana

Alexandria in Ariana was a city in what is now present-day Afghanistan, one of the twenty-plus cities founded or renamed by Alexander the Great. The third largest Afghan city, Herat, is the city's modern name. In 330BC the Greek armies of Alexander, moved the capital of the satrap of Aria from Artacoana to the site of Herat. In doing this he expanded an existing Persian fortress. Pliny places it on the river Arias and Eratosthenes places it nearby, while Ptolemy places it near a Lake Arius.

Karukh

Karukh is a town and the center of Karukh District, Herat Province, Afghanistan. The population is more than 18,800 people. The town is located at {{#invoke:Coordinates|coord}}{{#coordinates:34.49|N|62.59|E||||| | |name= }} at 1320 m altitude, 50 km northeast of Herat. Karukh’s busy bazaar is continuously mentioned in travelogues down through the centuries. The shrine of Hazrat Alla Berdi, Sufi ul-Islam, stands there (see the photo here).

Injil, Afghanistan

Herat International Airport

Herat International Airport is located 6.5 miles (10.5 km) southeast of the city of Herat in western Afghanistan, east of the Herat-Farah road, close to Guzara in the Guzara District of the Herat Province. It is believed to be the third largest after Afghanistan's Kabul International Airport, and Kandahar International Airport . The airport was originally built by engineers from the United States in the late 1950s.
