Arghandab River

Arghandab is a river in Afghanistan, about 400 kilometers in length. It rises in the Hazarajat country north-west of Ghazni, and flows south-west falls into the Helmand 30 km below Girishk. In its lower course it is much used for irrigation, under the control of the Helmand and Arghandab Valley Authority, and the valley is cultivated and populous; yet the water is said to be somewhat brackish.

Kandahar University

Kandahar University is a government funded higher learning institution in Kandahar, Afghanistan. It is one of two universities in southern Afghanistan. Kandahar University (KU) was established in 1990, at a time when the People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA) was in power under President Mohammad Najibullah. Tooryalai Wesa, who returned to the country after 13 years and is governor of Kandahar province, was the first Chancellor of Kandahar University.

Camp Nathan Smith

Camp Nathan Smith is an American military base in Kandahar City, Afghanistan. Originally, it was an abandoned fruit factory. In November 2003, it was built and operated by the US Army Soldiers of Charlie Battery, 3rd Battalion, 321st Field Artillery Regiment from Fort Bragg, North Carolina. It was turned over to the Canadian Military in 2005, and named after Private Nathan Smith of the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry.

2008 Kandahar bombing

The 2008 Kandahar bombing of February 17, 2008 in Kandahar, Afghanistan, was an attack targeting a crowd of people watching a dog-fighting competition. With more than 100 killed, it was the deadliest attack on Afghan soil since 2001. The target of the attack was believed to have been a local police commander who was killed in the blast, Abdul Hakim Jan. He was reported to be known in the area for the strong stand he took against Taliban forces.

Shrine of the Cloak

The Shrine of the Cloak is located adjacent to the Friday Mosque in Kandahar, Afghanistan. It contains the Kerqa, a cloak believed to have been worn by Islam's Prophet Muhammad. It is therefore widely held to be one of the holiest Islamic sites in Afghanistan, and even considered by some as the "heart of Afghanistan". The building's exteriors are of green marble from Lashkar Gah, with tiled surfaces and gilded archways. The cloak itself is locked away inside the mosque and is rarely seen.
