Sarandë District

The District of Sarandë (Albanian: Rrethi i Sarandës) is one of the thirty-six districts of Albania, found in southern Albania, in the County of Vlorë. The area of the district is 749 square kilometers. The population of the district was 48,474 (2010 estimate). According to the census of January 1993, it was 53,700. The centre of the district is the city of Sarandë. Other places include Konispol (at the border with Greece), Ksamil (a resort), Çukë, Vrinë and Butrint (an archeological site).

Vivari Channel

The Vivari Channel links Lake Butrint in Albania with the Straits of Corfu, and forms a border of the peninsula of Butrint. The channel flows in both directions, from the lake to the sea and vice-versa during the rising tide. A pontoon is situated near the gate of the Butrint National Park. Two small forts are situated in the southern part of the channel, and both were built during the rule of Ali Pasha of Ioánnina (in Albanian Janina).

Lake Butrint

Lake Butrinti (Albanian Liqeni i Butrintit), formerly known as Lake Vivari or Lake Vatzindro (or Vutzintró), lies in the south of Albania in Saranda. It is in fact a lagoon. It overlooks the Ionian Sea and it is quite large in size. Beside it is the Butrinti (Bouthroton) site which is full of ancient history and is one of Albania's most popular tourist attractions. Thyamis

The Thyamis, also known as Glycis or Kalamas, is a river in the Epirus region of Greece. It flows into the Ionian Sea. The names of the Chameria region (Tsiamouria in Greek), as well as the former Cham minority, derive from the river's name. Thyamis in ancient Greece was mentioned by Pausanias as forming the boundary between Thesprotis and Kestrine.
