Balranald

Balranald is a town and local government area in the Riverina district of New South Wales, Australia. At the 2011 census the population was 1,159. The town of Balranald is located where the Sturt Highway crosses the Murrumbidgee River in a remote, semi-desert area. Although it is part of New South Wales, Balranald receives Victorian television stations, with a range of Sydney and Melbourne newspapers available.

Balranald Shire

Balranald Shire is a local government area in the Riverina area of western New South Wales, Australia on the Sturt Highway. It is the location of World Heritage listed Mungo National Park. It includes the towns of Balranald and Euston. Other localities in the Shire include Kyalite, Hatfield, Penarie, Clare and Oxley. The Mayor of Balranald Shire Council is yet to be determined, following the 2012 local government election.

Wakool River

Wakool River, an anabranch of the Edward River that is part of the Murray River catchment within the Murray-Darling basin, is located in the western Riverina region of south western New South Wales, Australia. The Wakool River splits from the Edward River (itself an anabranch of the Murray) near Deniliquin, and flows generally to the west, southwest, northwest, and then west, joined by eleven minor tributaries, including the Niemur River.

Yanga National Park

Yanga is a 31,190-hectare national park located on frontage of 170 kilometres on the Murrumbidgee River and 5 kilometres east of Balranald, in the Riverina region of southwest New South Wales. Most of the park overlaps with the Lowbidgee Floodplain Important Bird Area (IBA), identified as such by BirdLife International because of its importance as a breeding site for waterbirds when flooded.
