Tyrendarra

Tyrendarra is a locality in south west Victoria, Australia. The locality is in the Shire of Glenelg local government area and on the Princes Highway, 338 kilometres south west of the state capital, Melbourne. The Tyrendarra township lies within a bend of Darlot Creek, before it enters the Fitzroy River—which also flows through the locality. At the 2006 census, Tyrendarra and the surrounding area had a population of 243.

Narrawong, Victoria

Narrawong is a small town in south west Victoria, Australia located on the Princes Highway to the east of Portland at the mouth of the Surry River. Narrawong Post Office opened on 1 March 1859. At the 2006 census, Narrawong and the surrounding area had a population of 176.

Portland Bay

Portland Bay is a small Bay off the coast of Victoria, Australia. It is about 360 km west of Melbourne. The main town on the bay is also named Portland. The western end of the bay is marked by the headland of Point Danger. The bay was named after the Duke of Portland, a Secretary of State and later Prime Minister of Great Britain, by Lieutenant James Grant sailing on the Lady Nelson, on 7 December 1800. The town of Portland later took its name from the bay.

Convincing Ground massacre

When Portland, Victoria was established as a whaling station in 1829, there was tension between the local Gunditjmara people Kilcarer gundidj clan and the whalers. In 1833 or 1834 this tension turned into a full fledged massacre in a dispute over a beached whale. The Convincing Ground is located in Portland Bay southwest of Melbourne, near the coastal town of Portland in the Shire of Glenelg and is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register.

Surry River

The Surry River is a river in southwestern Victoria, Australia. It flows into Portland Bay at Narrawong and is the first river east of the Glenelg River to reach the sea. It was named by Thomas Mitchell on accepting the suggestion of the Henty Brothers .
