Kalgan, Western Australia

Kalgan in a small town in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. The town is situated on the banks of the Kalgan River and was first known as Kalganup which mean "place of first camp" or "place of many waters". Indigenous Australians used the area as a meeting place up to 19,000 years ago. The name was first recorded in 1831 when explorer Alexander Collie charted the area. Land was set aside for a townsite in 1837 but was gazetted in 1912 following land being opened up in the area.

Great Southern Grammar

Great Southern Grammar is a coeducational independent residential and day school located in Lower Kalgan between the King River and the Kalgan River. The school is approximately 16 kilometres East of Albany, a regional centre 390 kilometres south-southeast of Perth, Western Australia. The campus has a total area of 100 acres bordered by Nanarup Road to the north, Oyster Harbour to the south, Johnston Creek to the west and the Kalgan River to the east.

King River, Western Australia

King River is a small town in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. It is located 406 km south east of Perth and the closest populated town is Albany. The town takes its name from the King River which is located nearby, another town, Lower King that is further down river on Oyster Harbour.

King River (Western Australia)

The King River is a river in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. The river rises east of the town of Redmond. The river flows for approximately 27 kilometres and along with the Kalgan River drains into Oyster Harbour and finally King George Sound north east of Albany. The river was named after Captain Phillip Parker King RN (1791-1856) by Dr Thomas Braidwood Wilson while exploring the region in December 1829.
