Narrikup, Western Australia

Narrikup is a small town between Albany and Mount Barker in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. At the 2006 census, Narrikup had a population of 515. The name Narrikup comes from the Aboriginal name of a nearby brook which is thought to mean "place of abundance". The area was visited by Thomas Wilson who travelled from Albany in 1829 when he camped on the banks of the stream west of the current townsite.

Plantagenet County, Western Australia

Plantagenet County was one of the 26 counties of Western Australia that were designated in 1829 as cadastral divisions, and was centred on the coastal settlement of Albany. It approximately corresponds to the modern-day Plantagenet Land District which forms the basis for land titles in the area.

Redmond, Western Australia

Redmond is a town in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. It is located 399 km South South East of Perth and the closest populated town is Albany. The town began when a railway siding was opened in the area in 1912 which was initially called Mulikupp. The townsite was later renamed in Redmond. In 1913 blocks were subdivided and by 1916 a school had been built and the town was gazetted. It is thought that the town was named after the Irish Nationalist leader, John Edward Redmond.

Gibraltar Rock (Western Australia)

Gibraltar Rock is a granite outcrop south of Perth in Western Australia, and is in the Porongurup National Park. From the rock, which is 2,100 feet high, Albany and the Great Southern Ocean can be seen. Since the 1970s, the Rock, along with some other local peaks, has become a popular venue for rock climbers.

Porongurup National Park

Porongurup National Park is a national park in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, 360 km southeast of Perth and 40 km from Albany. It protects the Porongurup Range, an extremely ancient and largely levelled mountain range formed in the Precambrian over 1200 million years ago. The present range is no more than fifteen km (10 miles) from east to west and consists of granite peaks levelled into domes.
