Nornalup, Western Australia

Nornalup is a small town located in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. The town is located along the South Coast Highway and on the banks of the Frankland River. The name derives from the local indigenous language: "Place of the Black Snake" - Norne - meaning "black snake" (aka Tiger Snake) -up meaning "place of". The area attracts considerable numbers of Tiger Snakes due to its proximity to the river and wetlands, though less now than in the past. Tiger Snakes are "froggers".

Frankland River

The Frankland River is a river in the great southern region of Western Australia. The Frankland River is the largest river by volume in the region and the eighth largest in the state. The Gordon River, a tributary of the Frankland river has its source south-west of the town of Broomehill. The other two smaller tributaries are Towerlup Brook and Ornabullup Creek. The Walpole River, the Deep River (Western Australia) and the Frankland all flow into the Nornalup inlet west of Walpole.

Walpole, Western Australia

Walpole is a town in Western Australia, 432 km SSE of Perth and 66 km west of Denmark. Walpole lies very close to the northern point of the 100-hectare Walpole Inlet, from which it takes its name. The inlet in turn is named for the Walpole River, discovered in 1831 by Captain Thomas Bannister, and named by Governor Stirling for Captain W. Walpole, with whom he had served aboard HMS Warspite in 1808. The first European settlers to arrive in the area were Pierre Bellanger and his family in 1909.

Nornalup Inlet

Nornalup Inlet is an estuarine body of water on the south coast of the South West of Australia, approximately 450 km from Perth. It is approximately 1,300 ha in extent, and up to 5 m deep. It is fed by the Deep and Frankland Rivers, and communicates with the Walpole Inlet via a natural channel approximately 1 km long and 2 m deep. The name is Noongar in origin, meaning "the place of the tiger snake".

Walpole River

The Walpole River is a river in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. The river was discovered by Captain Thomas Bannister in 1831 and named by Governor James Stirling after Captain W Walpole. The catchment of the Walpole River also provides drinking water to the town of Walpole. The water quality of the river is considered to be fresh.
