Wukan protests

The Wukan protests, also known as the Siege of Wukan, was an anti-corruption protest that began in September 2011, and escalated in December 2011 with the expulsion of officials by villagers, the siege of the town by police, and subsequent détente in the southern Chinese village of Wukan (pop. 12,000). The protests began on 21–23 September 2011 after officials sold land to real estate developers without properly compensating the villagers.

Wukan

Wukan is a coastal fishing village in Guangdong, China. It has a population of approximately 13,000 residents, and is located approximately 120 km east of Hong Kong. Administratively, Wukan is part of the Donghai subdistrict of Lufeng city, a county-level city within the prefecture-level Shanwei city.
