Duitama

Duitama is a city and municipality in Boyacá Department, part of the Tundama Province, a subregion of Boyaca, Colombia. It is located some 170 kilometres northeast of Bogotá, the capital city of Colombia and 55 kilometres northest of Tunja, the capital city of Boyaca. Duitama has existed since pre-Columbian times. According to the local oral tradition, the city was founded by the Muisca Chief Tundama. The city has a population of about 142,000 people.

Santa Rosa de Viterbo, Boyacá

Santa Rosa de Viterbo is a town and municipality in Boyacá Department, Colombia, part of the Tundama Province a subregion of Boyaca. Viterbite, not a mineral but a mixture of Allophane and Wavellite, occurs in and was named after this municipality. Fernando Soto Aparicio, screen writer, poet, and novelist, was born in Santa Rosa de Viterbo in 1933.

Vargas Swamp Lancers

Vargas Swamp Lancers or Monumento a los Lanceros is a large sculptural complex realized by Colombian artist Rodrigo Arenas Betancur in the department of Boyacá as a memorial for Vargas Swamp Battle. It is the largest monument in Colombia. This monument depicts the attack of the 14 lancers commanded by Colonel Juan José Rondón. It is 33 m high and was dedicated in the 150th anniversary of the Colombian Declaration of Independence (1970).

Vargas Swamp Battle

Vargas Swamp Battle (Spanish: Batalla del Pantano de Vargas) was an armed conflict that occurred near Paipa, on July 25, 1819. The joint Venezuelan and Neogranadan army commanded by Simón Bolívar was trying to prevent the Spanish forces from arriving at Santafe de Bogotá, which was lightly defended, before they did. Bolívar's army successfully bested the royalist army in spite of the exhaustion of the troops after climbing the Páramo de Pisba, and crossing the swamp.
