The name of the city derives from the name of the Precolumbian culture that inhabited the area, the Quimbaya civilization. The stadium holds 30,313 people. The stadium was built in 1971. The stadium was under reconstruction for the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2011. The stadium is going to host some games and is going to hold 40.000 people. An upper tier is being added to the stadium to match with the existing west upper tier.

Cartago (pronunciation kärtä'gō) is a city in southwestern Colombia, about 187 miles west of Bogotá. It is in the extreme northern portion of the Valle del Cauca Department. It is located very close to the city of Pereira, about a 20 minute drive. It is the fourth largest city in Valle after Cali, Palmira, and Tuluá. In 2003, it had a population of approximately 132,000 inhabitants.

Matecaña International Airport (Spanish: Aeropuerto Internacional de Matecaña) is an airport located in the city of Pereira, Colombia. It connects the Risaralda department of Colombia. It also serves the cities of Armenia, Cartago, and Manizales in emergency situations. The airport was built in 1945, and the runway was expanded to its current length between 1966 and 1968. It has one cargo ramp built in 1978.
