Sarapiquí (canton)

Sarapiquí is the name of the tenth canton in the province of Heredia in Costa Rica. The canton covers an area of 2,140.54 km², and has a population of 49,327. The capital city of the canton is Puerto Viejo. The canton includes the major portion of the Sarapiquí region, and is named for its major waterway, the Sarapiquí River, which forms the canton's eastern border. The western half of the canton gives way to the San Carlos Plain (Llanura de San Carlos).

Maquenque National Park

Maquenque National Park is a proposed National Park, which would form part of the Arenal Huetar Norte Conservation Area, in the northern part of Costa Rica. It would bring together a number of existing Nature Reserves, Wildlife refuges and Forest Reserves to form a new National Park. The park would cover areas between the San Carlos River and the Sarapiquí River and other areas near the Nicaraguan border.

La Paz Waterfall, Costa Rica

La Paz is a waterfall in central Costa Rica. In Spanish, it is known as Catarata de La Paz. It is 31 kilometres north of Alajuela, between Vara Blanca and Cinchona. The waterfall is located immediately alongside the road from Alajuela that leads to the northern plains of Costa Rica. The River La Paz forms the waterfall after traversing 8 kilometres of volcanic terrain, and then continues through the rainforest of the eastern side of Poás Volcano.

2009 Costa Rica earthquake

The 2009 Costa Rica earthquake (also known as Cinchona Earthquake), occurred at 1:21:34 pm local time on January 8, 2009. The epicenter of the 6.1 Mw earthquake was in northern Costa Rica, 30 kilometres north-northwest of San José. The earthquake was felt all over Costa Rica as well as in southern central Nicaragua.
