Geography of the Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is a country in the West Indies that occupies the eastern two-thirds of Hispaniola. It has an area of 48,442 km², including offshore islands. The land border between the Dominican Republic and Haiti, which occupies the western one-third of the island, is 275 km long. The maximum length, east to west, is 390 km from Punta de Agua to Las Lajas, on the border with Haiti. The maximum width, north to south, is 265 km from Cape Isabela to Cape Beata.

Hispaniola

Hispaniola is a major Caribbean island comprising the two sovereign nations of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The island is located between the islands of Cuba to the west and Puerto Rico to the east. Hispaniola is the site of the first European colonies in the New World which were founded by Christopher Columbus on his voyages in 1492 and 1493. It is the ninth-most-populous island in the world, and the most populous in the Americas.
