The Port of Puerto Plata is located in San Felipe de Puerto Plata, Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. This is the main harbor in the north coast and it is currently used for cargo operations and several military movements. Fortaleza San Felipe

Fortaleza San Felipe is a historic Spanish fortress located in the north of Dominican Republic in the province of Puerto Plata. Is also known as El Morro de San Felipe and was used to protect the City of Puerto Plata from pirates and corsairs. It is located on a hill at the Puntilla Del Malecón, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean; its strategic location protected the entrance to the city's seaport.

Puerto Plata (city)

San Felipe de Puerto Plata, often referred to as simply Puerto Plata, is the capital of the Dominican province Puerto Plata. The city is famous for resorts such as Playa Dorada and Costa Dorada, located east of San Felipe de Puerto Plata. There are a total of 100,000 hotel beds in the city. The only aerial tramway in the Caribbean is located in Puerto Plata. With it, one can ride up to Pico Isabel de Torres, a 793 meter high mountain within the city.

2003 Dominican Republic earthquake

On September 22, 2003 at 00:45 local time, a magnitude 6.4 Mw earthquake occurred close the northern coast of the Dominican Republic. Its epicenter was located at {{#invoke:Coordinates|coord}}{{#coordinates:19.847|N|70.666|W||||| | |name= }}, near the town of Luperon, Puerto Plata and 40 miles north the city of Santiago de los Caballeros. This earthquake could also be felt in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

Cordillera Septentrional

The Cordillera Septentrional runs parallel to the north coast of the Dominican Republic, with extensions to the northwest, the Tortuga island, and to the southeast, the Samaná Peninsula where it becomes the Sierra de Samaná. Its highest mountain is Diego de Ocampo, close to Santiago de los Caballeros, with 1,250 metres . There are several small plains between this range and the Atlantic Ocean. Rivers are short and most of them flow to the north.
